Maidenhead Bridge on Great Western Railway, ca 1860

Maidenhead Bridge on the Great Western Railway, c1860.  Bridge designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) to carry the GWR across the Thames at Maidenhead, Berkshire. Critics were convinced that the bridge would fall because of the breadth and flatness of the arches, 128 ft (39m) wide with a rise of 24ft 3in (7.39m) to the crown, but they were proved wrong.
