Pancreas, illustration

An illustration of the pancreas, an organ which acts as both an endocrine gland and digestive organ. The pancreas produces a variety of endocrine hormones such as insulin, glucagon, somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide. During digestion, the exocrine pancreas produces bicarbonate ions to neutralize acidic chyme from the stomach, as well as secrete pancreatic juice containing digestive enzymes to break down carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. The gallbladder (green) and a section of the duodenum are also included in the illustration.
