Sir John Lubbock, Bart, MP, FRS, Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, 1877. Lubbock (1834-1913) was an English banker, archaeologist, naturalist and politician. His Prehistoric Times, first published in 1865, was one of the most influential archaeological books of the 19th century. In it he coined the terms Palaeolithic and Neolithic for the first time. He also carried out research into the behaviour of ants and other insects. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
