Kuo Sung-Tao, first Chinese envoy to Great Britain, 1880. In 1875 he was commissioned by the Chinese Government to be the first diplomat that China had sent to a foreign country, and established himself at the Court of St James's, London. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
