Kerion from Ringworm, Illustration, 1880s

Kerion from ringworm (Tinea tonsurans et Kerion confertum). A kerion is an abscess caused by fungal infection. It most often occurs on the scalp (tinea capitis). This image shows a young male infected by a fungus referred to as ringworm. It has caused scalp lesions called Kerion and hair loss at the site of the ulcers. The lesions are typically spongy with a deep centre and crusty raised outer edges. The fungus (tinea corporis) is easily spread among humans but is not harmful and can be easily treated with anti-fungal medication. Chromolithograph, 1878-1888. Illustration by E. Burgess after R. W. Sherwin, Mabel Green and Jonathan Hutchinson.
