Comte Frederic de Lagrange (1816-1883) was the son of one of Napoleon's generals and himself a successful businessman. He was an early (though not a founder) member of the Societe d'Encouragement (Company of Encouragement), but took small part in racing until 1856, when he bought Alexandre Aumont's stud and stable. Thereafter, until his death, he was the greatest owner-breeder in France; his personal internationalizing of racing has no 19th century parallel.
