An opponent of the Tokugawa Shogunate and advocate of political reform, he was executed by the Tokugawa authorities in 1859, aged 29.<br/><br/> . Yoshida Shoin is enshrined at the Shoin shrine in Wakabayashi, Setagaya-ku, in Tokyo, as well as at his birthplace in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
