Joseph Black (1728-1799) Scottish chemist, born in Bordeaux, France, son of a wine merchant. Professor chemistry at Glasgow University. In 1757 he isolated carbon dioxide. Evolved the theory of latent heat. Engraving from A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen by Thomas Thomson (1870).
