Life of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux: Saint Bernard mediates a dispute between Bishop Stephan von Bar and Duke Matthew von Lothringen in Metz (one of two). Culture: German, Cologne. (1 cm). Date: after 1535. From a set of twenty-two windows, each with six scenes devoted to the Life of Saint Bernard, made for the glazed cloister at Altenberg, near Cologne. Saint Bernard and companion stand in white habits, surrounded by six soldiers on an island. In the yellow background is the town of Metz at left, cavalry and infantry in battle at right. The whole is framed by arch on columns.
