Portrait of Séverine. Artist: Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer). Dimensions: 23 1/2 x 18 1/4 in.  (59.7 x 46.4 cm). Date: 1885-87.
Caroline Rémy, known by her pen name "Séverine," was one of the first French women journalists and a passionate feminist and left-wing orator. Renoir drew her likeness on several occasions, here in charcoal over pastel and again in a pastel (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.).
