MARCEL DUCHAMP. The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass) - 1915-23. La Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même. by M. Duchamp. Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Large Glass has been described as a diagram of an ironic love-making machine of extraordinary complexity. The upper part is dominated by the Bride, whose imagined sexual fulfilment or blossoming is represented by a pink cloud. In the lower part, nine dressmakers models, or malic moulds (a pun on male and phallic), symbolise the Bachelors. The two realms communicate only through complex machinery including a series of sieves filled with dust and a chocolate grinder, which filter the Bachelors desire before it is shot upwards at the Bride.. Marcel Duchamp (July 28, 1887 - October 2, 1968) was a French/American artist whose work and ideas had considerable influence on the development of post-World War II Western art, and his advice to modern art collectors helped shape the tastes of the Western art world. His influence continues into the 21st century. Most often associated with the Surrealism movement and occasionally the Dada movement. ARTISTS COPYRIGHT MUST BE CLEARED
