[ 1920s Japan - Great Kanto Earthquake ] Japanese soldiers at work at the ruins of Tokyos Kandabashi Bridge destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake (Kanto Daishinsai) of September 1, 1923 (Taisho 12). The quake, with an estimated magnitude between 7.9 and 8.4 on the Richter scale, devastated Tokyo, the port city of Yokohama, surrounding prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka, and claimed over 140,000 victims. 20th century vintage gelatin silver print.
