His first construction of a contact lens (1887) was an afocal scleral contact shell made from heavy brown glass. He tested it first on rabbits, then on himself, and lastly on a small group of volunteers. Fick headed the field hospitals in France, Russia and Turkey during WWI, and lived to be 85.
