Pocket nocturnal and astrolabe or René Descartes, A Multifunctional Timepiece, Oval nocturlabium with hinged lid and swivel eyelet with carrying ring. Engraved on the lid 2 naked female figures (above) and 2 sphinxes (below). In addition, a rotating protractor and a small pointer are provided, which also serves as a closure. On the inside of the lid is engraved 'A René Descartes' and a list with names of European cities. Inside is a recessed hole and a compass. The needle is missing. A hinged ring with rotatable cross is attached to the edge. Inscription and marked., France, René Descartes, anonymous, 1600 - 1650, gold (metal), silver (metal), engraving, h 8 cm × w 5.1 cm × t 1.2 cm.
