ROBERT BURNS. From the original at the National Portrait Gallery Painting by Alexander Nasmyth. His original signature can be seen at the British Museum, London, on a letter addressed to Lady Winifred Maxwell Constable, 25th April, 1791. The Scottish national poet. Born 1759. From his fourteenth year he did the work of a grown ploughman. His first song, "Hansom Nell" was written at the age of sixteen in honour of a harvest partner. In 1785-86 wrote the contents of the "Kilmarnock Volume". Second volume of poems published at Edinburgh, which brought Burns £500 and kindled enthusiasm over all Scotland. Acknowledged Jean Armour as his wife, and settled in 1788 on the farm of Ellisland, Dumfriesshire. Left the farm and appointed excise officer then port officer. Died from exposure to the weather July 1796.
