Battle of Stoke, 16 June 1487. German mercenaries under Martin Schwarz making their last stand against the stronger and more disciplined forces of the English king. English longbows with steel - tipped arrows outshot the crossbows of the Germans which took far longer to reload. Important victory for Henry VII which brought an end to the rebellion centered around the pretender Lambert Simnel and secured the Tudor claime to the throne. Engraving c1880.
