The duplicity of Dumba and his dupe'. 'De Dumba, Austrian ambassador to the United States, with his wife. James Archibald the American who carried Dumba's secret messages. Following the arrest of Archibald and the protests of the American government, Dr. Dumba has been recalled from Washington to Vienna'. Konstantin Dumba was an Austro-Hungarian diplomat serving as its last accredited Ambassador to the United States and famous for having been expelled during World War I following accusations of espionage. In September 1915 the media reported that Dr. Dumba had been involved in schemes to sabotage the U.S. munitions industry. On 5 September, the news broke that he had admitted to giving an American news correspondent (James F. J. Archibald) a letter for delivery to Foreign Minister Baron Burián von Rajecz in Vienna. In the letter, he proposed certain measures to hamper the manufacture of munitions for the Allies in the US. James Archibald, was arrested in England and searched. Archibald was returned to the United States for a proper investigation (he was later released) and thereafter, Dumba became a persona non grata in Washington.
