William Penn (1644-1718). English writer and religious thinker. Influential Quaker, he founded the Pennsylvania Colony in British America in 1861. Critical of all religious groups except the Quakers, whom he considered the only truly Christian congregation in England at that time. Because of his religious convictions, he was imprisoned several times in the Tower of London. He refused to renounce his faith and publicly declared his membership of the religious congregation of the Religious Society of Friends, the Quakers. Portrait. Engraving.
