The Queen rode from Buchingham palace today to take the salute at the trooping the Colour ceremony on Horse Guards parade. Record crowds lined the route to watch the Queen go by, and from the early hours of this morning people had waited on Horse Guard's parade to see the ceremony. The Queen rode side-saddle on the police horse Winston and wore her specially designed Guard's uniform - a scarlet tunic, dark blue riding skirt, and a tricorne hat with the gold badge and white plume of the Grenadiers. Behind the Queen rode Prince Philip, in fieldmarshal's uniform, and the Duke of Gloucester, Colonel of the Scots Guards. On horse guards parade, the Colour of the 1st Battalion the Grenadier Guards, the senior Guards regiment, was trooped.
