The former Cathedral of St. Nazaire was the cathedral of Carcassonne until 1801. It is in origin a Romanesque building, consecrated by Pope Urban II in 1096. The church was enlarged between 1269 and 1330 in the Gothic style then predominant in France (Visigothic), largely at the expense of the Bishop of Carcassonne, Pierre de Rochefort. The west facade was once part of the town's fortifications. Inside, the Gothic choir (13th-14th centuries) contains 22 statues, 14th-15th century windows, and tombs, including that of the Crusader leader, Simon de Monfort. The basilica is listed as a National Monument of France.
