Cigaretten-Fabriken GmbH, Hamburg, clay, quickly turned, painted (ceramic), alternately fired, clay, painted and fired, Total: Height: 64 cm; Diameter: 40 cm; Muzzle diameter: 29.2 cm; Diameter: 22.2 cm (base); Width: 5.8 cm (handle (5.5 and 5.8 cm)), Inscription: Neck Side A: to the right of the body of Artemis , above Aktaion's head [], retr. (written as ), pottery, Argus guards the cow (Io), History of Diana (Artemis), late archaic, The storage vessel, immaculately preserved except for the lost lid, which betrays the sure hand of an important potter, surpasses in size most comparable vessels of late archaic and early classical times. Like the gable fields of a temple, the two necklaces sit high above the simple black-varnished vessel body. On the underside of the base a graffitto, probably the trademark of an exporter. The pictorial representations on the sides A and B of the neck are equivalent in content and care of the representation. The pictures on both sides show the killing of the hunter Aktaion and the giant Argos, both children of the father of the gods Zeus. Side A: Artemis, dressed in a long, richly pleated chiton with dots and a long scarf over her shoulders, wears her hair tied up in a knot at the back with a bandage; earrings hang from her ears. She hurries up from the left and points to Aktaion with bow and arrow in her outstretched right hand. The latter is wearing a deerskin, whose head is visible above his. He has tied the front legs of the deerskin in front of his chest, the hind legs stand off to both sides of the body. Aktaion sank to his knees under the attack of his four dogs. His bearded head is shown in profile to the left, the body frontally. Both figures are named by Dipinti. Side B: Hermes, dressed with Chlamys and Petasos, hurries from the left with drawn sword towards Argos.
