Tempozan

[ 1900s Japan - Lighthouse at Tempozan, Osaka ] The lighthouse at Tempozan (also Tenposan or Tenpozan) in Osaka Harbor. It was designed by Scottish engineer Richard Henry Brunton (1841-1901), the "Father of Japanese lighthouses," and became active in 1872 (Meiji 5). Tenpozan, which means Mt. Tenpo, got its name from the year it was created, Tenpo 2 (1831). In this year, the Ajigawa River was dredged and the mud was deposited on this location creating a "mountain" of about 20 meters high. It became an important marker for ships entering Osaka. 20th century vintage postcard.
