A relief depicting a lion attacking a bull, on the eastern staircase of Apadana Palace, at Persepolis, Iran. Persepolis was once the capitol of the Persian Empire, and dates from about 500 BC. The lion attacking the bull represents the coming of spring. Pesepolis was founded by Darius the Great around 518 BC and destroyed by Alexander the Great. The ruins lie about 500 miles south of Tehran.
