Korean War, Paratroopers, 1951

Captioned: "Paratroopers of the 187th RCT (Regimental Combat Team) float earthward from C-119's to cut off retreating enemy units south of Munsan, Korea." A regimental combat team was a provisional major infantry unit of the United States Army during the Korean War. The regimental combat team, or RCT, is formed by augmenting a regular infantry regiment with smaller tank, artillery, combat engineer, mechanized, cavalry, reconnaissance, Signal Corps, air defense, quartermaster, military police, medical, and other support units to enable it to be a self-supporting organization in the combat field. Paratroopers are military parachutists: soldiers, marines, and others trained in parachuting into an operation and usually functioning as part of an airborne force. They are used for tactical advantage as they can be inserted into the battlefield from the air, thereby allowing them to be positioned in areas not accessible by land. Photograph credited to Corporal P. T. Turner, U.S. Army, March 23, 1951.
