Cerne Abbas Giant, Dorset, 2008. Artist: Historic England Staff Photographer.

Cerne Abbas Giant, Dorset, 2008. Aerial view. The giant's origin is uncertain, although one theory is that he was cut to represent England's Hercules, as a parody of Oliver Cromwell. The rectangular earthwork above the giant is known as the Trendle, an Iron Age enclosure possibly for a farmstead. In the 19th century the earthwork was traditionally used as the setting for a Maypole. The site is in the care of the National Trust.
