Statue of Ganymede with the Eagle. Roman, after a Greek original from the Praxiteles school of the 3rd century BC. According to Homer, Ganymede was a Trojan prince and the most beautiful of mortals. He was abducted by Zeus, who had assumed the form of an eagle, to be taken to serve as a cup bearer to the Gods in Olympus, in return for which he was granted eternal youth. Found in the collection of The Hermitage, St Petersburg.
