Burgess Shale chordate

Lateral reconstruction of the primitive chordate, Pikaia gracilens, from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale of British Columbia. With the presence of a notochord along its back, this small worm-like precursor to the vertebrates is the earliest known representative of the phylum to which humans belong. The size averages about 4 cm. long.
