Gomphotherium angustidens, Miocene Proboscid

Gomphotherium is an extinct genus of elephant that had four tusks, two on the skull and two on the elongated lower jaw. The lower tusks are parallel and shovel-shaped. This illustration is a reconstruction of the Yuncos individual, from the Miocene of Spain. Gomphotherium was one of the most successful of all the prehistoric proboscideans with fossils being known from North America, Europe and Africa. Gomphotherium is an iconic genus of the Miocene of Europe being one of the most representative mammals of the Middle Miocene faunas.
