Agate from Brazil, LM

Polarized light photomicrograph of a thin section of agate from Brazil. Agate is made of microcrystalline silica (SiO2), called chalcedony. This image illustrates the origin of agate: hot, silica-rich solutions repeatedly deposit thin layers of chalcedony, often in radial patterns, that vary in shape, color, transparency and thickness. Sometimes linings of crystalline quartz may be present; other times 'dirty' solutions deposit black linings that help track the progressive growth of the rock. Polarized light, crossed polarizers and red tint plate. Thickness of section: 30 microns. Zeiss Axioscop 40pol. Width of view: 2.7 mm.
