Boeing B-29 Superfortress. U.S. four-engine propeller-driven heavy bomber. Produced by Boeing between 1943 and 1946, the first prototype made its maiden flight from Boeing Field, Seattle, on 21 September 1942, entering service on 8 May 1944. It was used mainly by the United States during the last phase of World War II and the Korean War (1950-1953). It was designed with cutting-edge technology for its time, including a pressurized cabin, dual-wheeled tricycle landing gear, and an analog computer-controlled fire-control system, which allowed one gunner and a fire-control officer to remotely direct four machine gun turrets.
