Burgess Shale sponge

Reconstruction of the sponge, Vauxia venata, from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale of British Columbia. Although quite different in appearance from the other four species of Vauxia from the Burgess Shale, its skeleton possesses a similar fused framework of fibers. Only two specimens of this species have been collected. The size of the expanding cups ranges from 20 to 50 mm across.
