Trans-Atlantic Hover-Planes Arrive In Scotland -- Nearing the end of the first ever helicopter crossing of the Atlantic, the United States Air Force helicopters "Hopalong" and "Whirl-O-Way" pass over the coastline prior to landing at Prestwick. Stripped down until they were little more than flying fuel tanks, the two Sikorsky H-19 copters flew in hops from the Westover Air Force base in Massachusetts. Their last hop, from Keflavik Air Base in Iceland, a distance of 740 miles, took 10 hours, five minutes. Total flying time for the 3,400 mile trip in five stages was 42 hours, 25 minutes. July 31, 1952.
