PETER PAUL RUBENS (1577-1640). FLEMISH PAINTER.. Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen, 1577-Antwerp, 1640). Flemish painter. "The Defenders of the Eucharist", ca. 1625. Around 1622-1625 the Infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia commissioned Rubens to design twenty tapestries for the Convent of the Descalzas Reales in Madrid. In order to do this, he had to first make some oil sketches. They treat the theme of the Eucharist. In the centre, Saint Clare of Assisi (1149-1253) wearing the Franciscan habit, who is given the features of the Infanta, holding the monstrance together with Saint Ambrose (looking towards the front), Saint Augustine (backwards) and Saint Gregory the Great carrying the papal cross. On the other side, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Norbert (wearing a white habit) and Saint Jerome. Oil on panel (65,5 x 68 cm). Prado Museum. Madrid. Spain.
