ANGELIKA KAUFFMANN. Edward Smith Stanley (1752-1834), Twelfth Earl of Derby, with His First Wife (Lady Elizabeth Hamilton, 1753-1797) and Their Son (Edward Smith Stanley, 1775-1851)

ANGELIKA KAUFFMANN. Edward Smith Stanley (1752-1834), Twelfth Earl of Derby, with His First Wife (Lady Elizabeth Hamilton, 1753-1797) and Their Son (Edward Smith Stanley, 1775-1851). Artist: Angelica Kauffmann (Swiss, Chur 1741-1807 Rome). Dimensions: 50 x 40 in. (127 x 101.6 cm). Date: ca. 1776.
The earl and countess of Derby were married in June 1774 and their son, pictured here, was born in April 1775. The picture was probably painted in the following year. It is one of two versions (the other, which is signed, remains with the sitters' descendants). After Lady Derby's death, the earl married Elizabeth Farren, whose celebrated portrait by Lawrence belongs also to the Museum.
Lady Derby's costume is vaguely classical while her husband wears fancy dress, a seventeenth-century-style slashed doublet with a lace Van Dyck collar and matching knee britches.
