View of La Crescenza. Artist: Claude Lorrain (Claude Gellée) (French, Chamagne 1604/5?-1682 Rome). Dimensions: 15 1/4 x 22 7/8 in. (38.7 x 58.1 cm). Date: 1648-50. In its immediacy and breadth of handling, this small picture recalls drawings that Claude made from nature in the environs of Rome. The composition is recorded in the painter's Liber Veritatis. The building, which still stands in the outskirts of Rome, was a medieval fortress transformed into a country house, which in the seventeenth century belonged to the aristocratic Crescenzi family.
