Artist's impression of the European Space Agency's Gaia space probe. Gaia's mission is to create the most detailed three-dimensional map ever made of the Milky Way galaxy. The Gaia satellite was launched in December 2013 and went into orbit around the Langrangian point L2, located about 1.6 million kilometers away from the Earth, in the direction opposite to the Sun. Gaia will chart a billion stars (about 1% of the stars in our galaxy) using two telescopes and three scientific instruments. On September 14, 2016, the mission released its first set of data from a year of scanning the sky.
