The Holy Family with the Young Saint John the Baptist. Artist: Andrea del Sarto (Andrea d'Agnolo) (Italian, Florence 1486-1530 Florence). Dimensions: 53 1/2 x 39 5/8 in. (135.9 x 100.6 cm). Date: ca. 1528.
Sarto was known as "the painter without defects." His figures are masterfully drawn, beautifully colored, and composed with an air of nobility. Giovanni Borgherini commissioned this grand Holy Family during the short-lived rule of Florence as a Republic before the Medici family was reinstated violently and permanently as its rulers. Sarto expressed the political meaning through the imagery of Christ holding the orb, suggesting his exclusive kingship--a known symbol of the Republic.
