Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (August 2, 1834 - October 4, 1904) was a French sculptor, also known as Amilcar Hasenfratz. He went to Paris to further his studies in architecture as well as painting. Then he made a long trip to Egypt and Yemen, where he heard about the Suez project and came back to his native city to became a architect. His first masterpiece is General Rapp's monument in Colmar.
