VASILY SURIKOV. 'The Boyar Morozova (a study)', 1881, (1965). Sketch for 'Boyarynya Morozova', a painting of 1887, depicting Feodosia's arrest by the Nikonians in 1671. Feodosia Morozova (1632-1675) was one of the leading figures of the Old Believer movement that split from the Russian Orthodox Church after 1666-1667 in protest at religious reforms instigated by Patriarch Nikon. She was arrested and imprisoned, along with her sister, Princess Evdokia Urusova, in the cellar of the St Paphnutius Monastery in Borovsk. Feodosia starved to death there in 1675 and was venerated as a martyr by the Old Believers. Painting in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. From "Russian Painting of the 18th and 19th Centuries" by Vladimir Fiala. [Artia, Czechoslovakia, 1965].
