The Fatimid dynasty of Ismaili Shi'a muslims controlled an empire in North Africa and the Middle East from 909 to 1171 AD, with Egypt as the center of their caliphate. They took their name from Fatimah, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, from whom the Fatimids claimed descent.
