Penny-Farthing, Bicycle, Miniature Bike, 1919

Editorial use only . Men with three types of bicycles. The penny-farthing, also known as a high wheel, and high wheeler, was the first machine to be called a bicycle. It was popular in the 1870s and 1880s, with its large front wheel providing high speeds (large distance for every rotation of the legs) and comfort (shock absorption through the wheel). A bicycle, also called a cycle or bike, is a human-powered, pedal-driven, single-track vehicle, having two wheels attached to a frame, one behind the other. Bicycles were introduced in the late 19th century in Europe, and by the early 21st century, more than 1 billion have been produced worldwide. No photographer credited, December 3, 1919.
