ASTROLOGY - MACROCOSM. This is one of the most complex of all Robert Fludd's many complex arcane diagrams. It portrays the relationship between the Macrocosm and the Microcosm, by the mediator, Anima Mundi, or the World Soul. This personfication is chained to God (the four letter word in the cloud is the Hebraic Tetragrammaton, or name of God), while in turn holding a chained monkey: this is the Ape of Nature, or Art - the creative impulse being, on the plane of the material world, akin to the power of God. Around this central Ape, the spheres revolve. The inner spheres, extend from the Earth out to Animalia, the equivalent of the modern Etheric. Beyond these spheres are the spheres of the Elements of Air and Fire, followed by the planetary sphers, proper, starting with the moon, and progressing to Saturn. In the mediaeval tradition, these planetary spheres were governed by angelic beings - for example, the Sphere of the Moon was governed by the Angels, the Sphere of Mercury by the Archangels, the Sphere of Venus by the Archai, and so on. Beyond the Sphere of Saturn (ruled by the Trones, or Thrones) was the Stellatum, followed by those of the Cherubim and Seraphim. God was outside these spheres, yet controlled them all, by means of his ministering angels, or hierarchies. From Robert Fludd, Utriusque Cosmi Historia (De Supernaturaali, Naturali, Praeternaturali, etc..) 1624 edn.
