Halley's Comet, 1456

Halley's Comet has been observed and recorded by astronomers since at least 240 BC. This illustration appears in The Luzerner Schilling (Lucerne Chronicle), an illuminated manuscript of 1513, and depicts the apparition of Halley's Comet in 1456. It reflects the medieval perception that the comet is a portent of doom, a bad omen, the cause of plague, famine and blighted crops. Halley's Comet last appeared in the inner Solar System in 1986 and will next appear in 2061.
