The bunyip is a devil or evil creature from the aboriginal mythology of southeastern Australia, said to lurk in swamps, billabongs, creeks, riverbeds, and waterholes. Numerous tales of the bunyip appeared in the 19th and early 20th centuries. One of the earliest known is a story in Andrew Lang's The Brown Fairy Book (1904), in which this illustration by Henry Justice Ford appears. Colorized.
