Digestive system. Illustration of the components of the human digestive system or alimentary canal, as positioned naturally over a silhouette of the human body. At top, the oesophagus is a muscular tube which leads from the mouth to the stomach. In the stomach (kidney-shaped, pink) food is digested and it passes into the duodenum (C-shaped tube) for further chemical breakdown. The gall bladder (grey bulb) secretes bile enzyme into the duodenum while the pancreas (yellow) secretes a pancreatic enzyme. Digested food then passes into the small intestine (pink) and large intestine (brown) where nutrients are absorbed into the body. The liver (purple, top) metabolises nutrients in the blood.
